5-day / 4-night itinerary

Four nights in Los Angeles: studios, Griffith, museums, and coast

Arrive near the hotel district, give Hollywood a studio morning, Griffith its late light, museums and Downtown their own day, then finish along Santa Monica and Venice.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Four nights link Hollywood, Griffith, Wilshire or Downtown museums, and a Pacific finish without repeating the same basin crossing every day.

Best length

5 days / 4 nights

Four nights cover an arrival evening, three complete city days, and a coastal departure morning; add nights for Universal, the Getty Center, Malibu, or major events.

Stay

The Hollywood Roosevelt

Storied property offering airy, upscale rooms & suites, plus an outdoor pool & a nightclub.

Main activity

Hollywood studios, Griffith ridges, museum districts, and the Pacific coast

Hollywood carries Day 2, Griffith Day 3, museums and Downtown Day 4, and the coast belongs on departure morning—not stacked into a single marathon.

Daily geography

One cluster, one evening district

Walk within each district; reach for Metro, bus, rideshare, or a car only when the day's geography truly requires it.

Hollywood boulevard and studio-era architecture
Keep the first full day around Hollywood and one studio experience rather than crossing the basin repeatedly.
Griffith Observatory above the Los Angeles basin
Pair Griffith with Los Feliz or Thai Town and let heat, visibility, and evening access determine the order.
Modern museum architecture in Los Angeles
Museum Row and Downtown are separate clusters; choose one major museum district for the day.
Santa Monica coast in late Pacific light
Give Santa Monica and Venice a dedicated west-side day instead of attaching them to Hollywood or Downtown.

Arrival

Check in, eat nearby, and learn the immediate neighborhood.

After transfer and check-in, keep the first dinner within walking distance of the room. A short Boulevard stroll or one familiar street builds context without spending arrival energy on a cross-basin drive.

6:30 PM

First dinner

Start with Maccheroni Republic.

Handmade pasta anchors an Italian menu in downtown’s Old Bank District, with specialties including truffle cheese fondue and slow-cooked ossobuco.

Day 2

Hollywood morning and one studio experience.

Book Warner Bros. or Paramount for a working backlot, or commit a full day to Universal—then keep the evening in Hollywood, Los Feliz, or West Hollywood.

8:30 AM

Breakfast

Eat close to the timed entry.

A French bakery, café, and dinner restaurant occupies Charlie Chaplin’s historic 1929 building, serving pastries, breads, composed plates, and raw-bar selections.

10:00 AM

Main activity

Give one studio or film-history choice the morning.

Working backlots, Universal, the Academy Museum, and a selective Boulevard walk tell different stories. Pick one, confirm current operations, and let it run long enough to feel real.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Add one film-history chapter, not three.

Pair the studio with nearby theaters or Museum Row only when the finish point makes sense. Save Griffith, Downtown, and the coast for their own days.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Choose dinner at 71Above.

A three-course modern American menu is served 71 floors above downtown, with panoramic city views from the U.S. Bank Tower.

Day 3

Griffith Park, the observatory, and Los Feliz.

Take cooler morning hours for a ridge walk if the forecast allows, then reach the observatory for exhibits, terraces, or late light according to current access and programs.

8:30 AM

Breakfast

Begin in Los Feliz or Thai Town.

Eat below the park before climbing; carry water and sun cover because shade and services vary sharply by route.

9:00 AM

Ridges and city views

Choose the observatory, a viewpoint, or a real trail.

The observatory can fill several hours without a long hike. Trails add heat, exposure, elevation, and seasonal closure risks that must be checked separately.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Descend to Los Feliz or Thai Town for dinner.

Keep the evening on the east side—Los Feliz cafés, Thai Town tables, or Silver Lake—rather than driving to the coast after sunset.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Dinner in Los Feliz, Thai Town, or Silver Lake.

Choose a table below the park where the walk or ride back to the hotel stays short.

Bookable Experiences

Universal Studios Hollywood General Admission Ticket

Day 4

Museum Row, architecture, and Downtown culture.

Choose Museum Row around Wilshire or a Downtown arts cluster as the major daytime commitment—one campus or compatible pair, not four rushed tickets.

8:30 AM

Breakfast

Start near the first museum.

Confirm opening days, timed admission, parking, bag rules, and final entry before setting the morning.

10:00 AM

Art, design, and city history

Give one major collection an attentive visit.

LACMA, the Academy Museum, the Petersen, The Broad, MOCA, and the Getty Center occupy different campuses and districts. Two well-matched institutions beat four partial admissions.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Evening in Grand Avenue, Little Tokyo, or the Arts District.

Grand Avenue, Broadway, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, and the Arts District sit close on a map but still need a chosen walking or transit sequence—pick two adjoining areas and stay there for dinner.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Dinner in Downtown, Little Tokyo, or Koreatown.

Book where the museum day ends: Grand Avenue rooms after The Broad or MOCA; Little Tokyo or the Arts District after a Wilshire morning with a Metro transfer east.

Bookable Experiences

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood

Departure

Santa Monica, Venice, and checkout.

Give the Pacific one last morning—pier light, beach air, canals if time allows—before the airport or drive home. Keep Malibu and Getty Villa for a longer return trip.

9:00 AM

Departure morning

Breakfast on the west side near the route out.

Eat in Santa Monica or Venice rather than crossing back to Hollywood for one last meal. Confirm checkout, luggage, and transit or driving time before adding stops.

11:00 AM

One last stop

Walk Santa Monica toward Venice before leaving.

Palisades Park, the pier district, and Ocean Front Walk fit a departure morning when bags are stored and the E Line or drive schedule is confirmed.
